Gary Childersmith, 46, a resident of the Bethany community, died Sunday morning, February 11, 2007 at his home.
A Celebration of Gary’s Life will be held on Friday, February 16, 2007 at 11:00 AM at the Greater Portland Bible Church, 2374 SW Vermont Street in Portland, with Pastor Jon Sturm, officiating. A reception will follow at the church. Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2007 at 2:00 PM at the Forest View Cemetery, 1161 W. Pacific Avenue in Forest Grove, with Reverend Louis Urbanski of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Aloha, officiating. A reception will follow at the home of Larry and Doris Beman, 50579 SW Scoggins Valley Road in Gaston. GARY CHILDERSMITH was born March 6, 1960 in Hawthorne, California, the son of Clark Smith and Verna June (Soresen) Smith. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Oregon, settling in the Beaverton community. They later lived in Casper, Wyoming for a time before moving to Grants Pass, Oregon until 1972 when they moved to Hillsboro, Oregon. Gary graduated from Mount Angel Preparatory High School in 1979. Following high school, Gary worked at Maryville Nursing Home in Beaverton before enlisting in the United States Navy for six years. He served in Oakland, San Diego, Guam and Japan. He attended Portland State University, where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Cellular Microbiology in 1992. As part of his post graduate work, Gary interned at the Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, Idaho receiving Certification as a Laboratory Technologist. Gary Smith was united in marriage to Karen Childers on October 26, 1991 at the Old Scotch Church in Hillsboro, Oregon. They combined their last names to become the Childersmiths. Following their marriage they have made their home in Southwest Portland. After the birth of their two eldest children, Gary and Karen moved to the Bethany area. Gary and Karen celebrated their 15th Wedding Anniversary this past October. Gary worked as a Medical Technologist for Providence St. Vincent Medical Center until 2006 when he was no longer able to work due to his health. The Childersmiths were dedicated members of the Greater Portland Bible Church in Portland. Among his interests, Gary enjoyed building kayaks, hiking, camping and going on fun adventures with his children. He loved his family very much and was very active in all his children’s activities. He was preceded in death by his mother, Verna June Smith in 2004; and a brother, David Jay Smith in 1955. Gary is survived by his wife, Karen Childersmith and their three children, Megan, Jacob, and Spencer; his father, Clark Smith of Hillsboro, Oregon; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Diane and Rick Monger of Aloha, Oregon; Bonnie and Leo Custer of Portland, Oregon; Mary and Harry Lem and Monica and Brian Allen all of Temecula, California; and Barbara Smith and Herman Colbert of Hillsboro, Oregon. |
